Story on Display: Fall Semester
Aug. 22nd, 2013 11:04 amNakano Miho wasn’t always this crazy. She was misunderstood in the beginning. She came from a poor background. Her father left when she was really small. Her mother’s health was failing, but she gave it her all to take care of her daughter. There was an older brother once upon a time before Miho was born, but he died of a genetic heart defect when he was a baby. Her mother barely talked about him. In fact, she pretended he didn’t even exist. Miho tried to ask about her brother, but her mother would change the subject. Other than that, Miho pretty much lived a stable childhood.
All she wanted to do was make her mother proud. Miho gave it her all to do so. She studied all through her school years. Her mother tried to slow her down.
“Miho-chan, all of your work is not necessary,” she would tell her all of the time. “Just be a normal kid.” Her daughter didn’t listen. She had her reasons of wanting to the best. Her mother always looked so sad. Her eyes looked like they would spill tears at any given moment. Miho’s heart broke when she saw her mother in such sorrow.
“Momma, why are you so sad?” she asked one day when she was six years old. Her mother shook her head.
“It’s nothing sweetie,” she said. “Just have a good day at school.” At that moment, little Miho decided to try and be the best that she could be. “I will make you proud, mama!” she thought. So, she excelled in school all in the name of her mother. The girl worked her way all the way to Todai. Her mother couldn’t have been happier on graduation day.
Despite all of the success and book smarts that Miho possessed, she still couldn’t function well in other aspects of her life. The freshman didn’t seem to have any friends at all. She barely talked to anybody at school. As a matter of fact, Miho hid in the very back of the classroom and told notes all day. Her teachers wanted to help her out, but they didn’t know where to start. Nobody could really figure that girl out. Miho barely talked to anybody. She spent most of her time in the library with her nose in the books. That many people noticed her. Why would they? Miho never really did anything remarkable. She just kept to herself and studied.
But yet, Miho had a secret. She had developed a crush on someone. She had fallen for her sociology professor, David Gabriel. Miho first met him on the first day of classes. David didn’t seem to fit in with the other professors in Todai. He was more free spirited and taught things his own way. Everyone found him mesmerizing in any way. The man hailed from Los Angles, California. He never really wore a suit to work. It was always shorts, t-shirts, jeans, and sandals to work. David didn’t care about what anyone thought about him. He just did as he pleased. But, that wasn’t why Miho had fallen for him so quickly.
The day they first met started off as nothing special. Miho took her seat in the very back of the classroom. She opened up her textbook that she bought from the store last week and started reading. The classroom began to fill up one by one. None of them seemed to notice her. Miho kept reading of her sociology book to get an idea of what to expect for class. But then came a change in her plans.
Miho happened to glance up from her textbook when she noticed David walk into the room. Something in her mind clicked and switched paths. He looked so young to be a professor. Maybe too young. That wasn’t the only thing that drew Miho in, however. David looked around at his class.
“Is this everyone?” he asked. The students didn’t answer. David clapped his hands together after he finished counting them off. A grin spread across his youthful face.
“Good morning class!” he greeted his students.
“Morning,” they all mumbled back. David shook his head.
“Let’s try this again,” he said. “Good morning class!”
“Good morning!” the students said back, louder this time. The professor smiled at them.
“Much better,” he said. “My name is David Gabriel and I will be your professor for sociology.” He went on into about the class and the syllabus to the students. They listened on as if he was casting a powerful spell on them to hold their attention on him in place. For some reason, Miho found herself unable to focus on a single word that he was saying. Her mind was distracted to the man himself. Sure, she had seen charming guys in her life. But, David was… well… different. She didn’t seem to know how to put what her thought about him were together in words, but she found herself drawn into him. Maybe too quickly and maybe in an unhealthy way. Nobody could really say at the time because they never did notice Miho and just ignored her like they normally did.Fall Semester:
