Gakt

Love is Just a Bloodsport:

Seventeen year old Meri McKenzie met Gakt on the first day of school. It was as if he had taken a pistol and shot her in her pretty chest. Gakt was a pretty boy. Dark black hair, cold jet black eyes, very pale, short black-painted nails, and black eyeliner. He wore all black with chains. Many girls were attracted to him.

But yet, Gakt went through relationships pretty quickly. He never really held onto a girlfriend for too long. All of the people of Okinawa knew why. Gakt was a sick twisted individual. Some thought he was a demon. He himself called himself the devil. However, the girls found it very difficult to avoid him like the plague. Meri was no exception to the rule.

Meri was the perfect victim for Gakt from the beginning. For starts, she was the new girl in Okinawa. Gakt loved to prey on fresh meat. “The new lambs are always the best,” he would say. Second, Meri was pretty innocent. She was the good girl in her family. She was your typical American girl. Straight A student, academically smart, and got along with everyone. Meri was a very shy girl. She was a sweet little mommy’s girl. Also, Meri was a pretty girl. She had long golden blonde hair, rose wine colored eyes, tall, slender, and very clean-looking. All of this made her the perfect target for Gakt’s cruel ways.

Devil in a Blue Dress
I: Violet Rays

Pandora walked around the Factory for a little while. She felt like Alice in Wonderland. Andy had been the rabbit. Jamaica and Savannah were the Cheshire cat. Who would Alice run into next?

That came with a scent of heavy smoke. Pandora thought that she would choke to death. (Sure, everyone smoked in England, but not this bad!) The poor soul became dizzy and stumbled into a random room. In time, Pandora’s vision returned. She looked as if she had walked into a time machine. 60’s memorabilia all over the place. Black light posters on the wall. Jimi Hendrix ruled the room. The same smoke floated around in the room, only much lighter.

Pandora looked above her. Love beads hung from the ceiling.

“Wow,” was all she could say.

“It’s my element,” a woman’s voice told her. Pandora looked up right away. A woman sat on the floor smoking. Purple invaded the woman. Her long dark purple hair served as a cape. The lilac highlights in her hair brightened her up some. She looked really pale all over. Her skinny fingers clutched the cigarette tightly. Pandora looked her up and down.

Kabukicho, Tokyo. Present Day.

A twenty-something hooker romanced the street looking for a john. Tonight had been rough. All of the good men had been taken. She had to her someone tonight. The hooker kept wandering the streets. Not many people were out in Kabukicho tonight. Rightfully so, she thought. Fishnets and a summer school uniform were not a good choice in December. The hooker shivered as the wind blew past her skirt.

I need a man and dinner, she thought. I need a drink.

Chapter Three: Elizabeth:

I stayed in the Campbell twins’ apartment until close to midnight. Cassie and Blake went to bed after staying up talking over tea for so long. I watched Cassie as she slept in her bed. She looked so peaceful lying there. The moonlight through the slits of the blinds shined beautifully on her young lovely face. She really did look like her face sleeping. I wanted to kneel down and kiss her on the lips. Instead, I lightly pushed her hair away from her face. Cassie turned over a bit in her sleep as she mumbled something softly in her dreams. I couldn’t hear what she said. I smiled at my young beloved kindly.

“Sweet dreams, my love,” I whispered to her. I turned and quietly walked away. I took the late night bus back to my apartment. As I rode deep into the night, I began to remember my sweet Elizabeth and the times we spent together in England.

*Twenty-three years ago*

I worked in England as doctor then. I lived in London in a quiet life. I went through med school in three short years. Believe it or not, I was top-student in my classes. I became the favorite of the teachers almost immediately. I took pride in my work. After I graduated from med, I landed a job at London Hospital. It didn’t take long for me to become an attending and shortly after that, I had my own practice. Everyone came to me for help and guidance. I helped everyone get better both physically and emotionally. The council always looked upon me with favor. I was content with my life in London until I met her…

It was raining outside that day. I remember that. I had just opened my practice for the day. The rush hadn’t started up yet. Back then, Elizabeth was known as Elizabeth Hobbs. She was seventeen at the time and I had just turned twenty-seven three days ago. I remember her clearly. She had the face and body of a little angel. Short golden red hair to her ears that begged for someone to play with it. Sweet brown eyes that seemed to have fallen from the stars. Cheeks as soft marshmallows. Judging by how Elizabeth was dressed, she was just a pretty little rich girl. When I saw her, I thought she was a cute little baby doll. I wanted to squeeze her tummy to see if she would say, “Momma.” She came in with her parents that morning. Her father came over to me.

“Please sir,” he pleaded to me. “Can you help us? Our daughter is bleeding internally again and we don’t how to stop it! We just moved to London and we heard you were the best in the city. Can’t you help us?” I already wanted to. He didn’t have to ask me at all. I nodded at him gracefully.

“No problem,” I replied. I turned to that cute little baby doll.

“It’s okay, darling,” I told her. “I’ll have you fixed up right away.” She nodded at me in such pain. I lightly patted her on the head as I smiled at her. I turned back to her parents.

“She’ll be okay,” I promised them. “She’s in good hands now.” The parents nodded at me trusting. I lightly lifted Elizabeth and took her back to one of my office rooms. I sat her down onto my operating table.

“There you are,” I said to her softly. “Let’s get a good look at you, shall we?” I began to examine the little angel like I normally would. But as I examined the poor girl, something strange happened. Elizabeth looked over at me in pain.

“What’s your name?” she asked me. Normal so far.

“Dr. William Stonem,” I replied. “Yours?”

“Elizabeth Hobbs,” she replied.

“I see,” I told her. I continued on with examination. Elizabeth looked up at me again.

“Are you married?” she asked me bluntly. I froze and looked up at her in shock. I hadn’t prepared for that one at all.

“Sorry?” I asked her. She gave me a weak little smile.

“I didn’t mean it like that,” Elizabeth told me softly. “I was just curious.” Whether it was true or not, she had me hooked into her at that very second. I had no choice but to answer the question.

“No, miss,” I said to her. “I’m a bachelor.”

“Oh,” the little angel said. “I see.” I examined her even more. Turns out, Elizabeth had bleeding problems that needed surgery to be fixed right away. I was happy to work on her there. I got right to work on it right away. The problem turned out to be easy to fix. She seemed to have some holes in her organs that just needed to be patched up. With my skilled hands, I saved my beloved’s life. But yet, my work wasn’t over yet. I kept Elizabeth in hospital for a seventy-two hour observation. My connection with her didn’t end there however.

Pretty soon, I found myself visiting her in the hospital all of those three days she was in hospital. The first two started out as innocent. I would just bring her flowers and check on her. She lived up to her angelic nature. No questions followed us there. But on the night of the third hour, that all changed. I went over to her room like a normally did with the flowers and all. I knocked on the door.

“Come in,” Elizabeth said softly to me. I slowly opened the door. Elizabeth sat up in her bed looking at me. She seemed to be waiting for me for a long time. I noticed that she had a small smile on her face. I didn’t think much about it at first.

“Hello Elizabeth,” I greeted her.

“Hello doctor,” she said back to me. I neatly put the flowers in the vase. She watched me do so. I arranged the newly-cut blossoms in a neat way for my beloved.

“They’re very beautiful,” she said to me.

“Thank you,” I said to her. “I cut them myself.” She looked at me slightly surprised.

“You have garden?” Elizabeth asked me.

“Yeah,” I replied. “I tend to it when I am stressed.” My love looked at me amazed.

“Nobody has time to garden in the city,” she replied. “How do you manage?” I gave her a little shrug.

“I just make a little time for myself now and again,” I answered simply. Young Elizabeth looked me intrigued. I seemed like a display at a museum to her. I could see the curious about me in her eyes.

“What else do you like to do?” she asked.

“Oh,” I replied. “Not much. Just to read, take walks, and do research about human nature on my off days. You?” Elizabeth shrugged at me a little bit.

“Not much,” she replied. “Reading and other normal teenage girl things.”

“Reading, huh?” I asked. “What’s your favorite book?” She thought about that for a moment. A devilish little smile came onto her face. It kind of scared me in a sense. I had never seen that side of her before. She turned to me boldly.

Eros the Bittersweet,” Elizabeth answered with such confidence. I raised an eyebrow at her.

“Isn’t that a little mature for a girl your age?” I questioned. Elizabeth smiled that creepy smile at me again.

“Oh, you would be surprised…” she replied. For some reason, I found myself drawn into those words. This demonic angel seemed to set my heart on fire. I couldn’t piece together why. She just did. I don’t really know happened from there. But all I know is that Elizabeth and I ended up sharing a kiss right on her bed. Our kisses didn’t stop from there. One thing led to another and I ended up asleep on her bed with her. I managed to get away without being seen hours later.

Our affair began from there. For many years, Elizabeth and I kept seeing each other. Things didn’t really heat up until her eighteenth birthday. I remember that night as well. Such a calm and quiet summer night that was. I had just finished up my paperwork for the night when I received a knock on my door. I looked up slightly curious.

“Who is it?” I asked.

“It’s me, Elizabeth!” my angel called out loud. This really peeked my interests now. What could my love be doing here at this time of night? Curious, I walked over to the door and opened it. There stood my love in the doorway. Girl of eighteen looking healthier than when I last saw her. She still looked as beautiful as she did the last year. But yet, my love had a sad and worried look in her eyes. I didn’t know what to say at first.

“Elizabeth,” I said. “What’s the matter?” She didn’t say anything at first. My love grabbed me tightly by the hands.

“Give me a reason to be a woman!” she pleaded to me. “Make me a real woman tonight!” Such an offer that I couldn’t turn down. I just kissed her deeply on the lips. She kissed me right back. It all took off from there. I took into my apartment and led her all the way back to my bedroom. We stripped down and placed her onto my bed. That night, I took her virginity. I should have felt guilty because she was much younger than me and she was my patient. But strangely, I didn’t feel that at all. All I felt that night was pure feelings of love. I loved Elizabeth and I wanted to marry her. But yet, I knew that I couldn’t. I guess that’s what made her even more desirable. We lied in bed together after the whole passion fire storm. My love turned to me. She lightly grasped my hand.

“William,” she said to me pleadingly. “Stay with me forever. Promise that you will. I want to hear you say it!” I smiled at her kindly and patted her on the hand.

“Of course I will,” I said to her. “I wouldn’t have it any other way.” She smiled at me warmly and kissed me on the lips. I kissed her back. Our affair continued on from there. Night after night, Elizabeth came by my apartment to see me. In time, she grew into an alluring and powerful young woman. She graduated from London University with honors. My love inherited her parents’ whole fortune. She had become one of the most prosperous women in London. But yet, my love never forgot about me. Elizabeth always came to see me every night. She opened my eyes to many things. Pretty soon, I began to doubt all that I had ever known. So much so that it began to show in my life. Everyone around me noticed how my attitude towards life had changed dramatically. I didn’t pay any mind to it at first; I just went on with my secret double life as usual. But then, it all began to creep into me slowly. So much so that I had to ask my love a burning question that had haunted my mind ever since the first night that we slept together.

“Elizabeth,” I spoke up to her while we were lying in my bed on the night of her twentieth birthday. She looked up at me innocently.

“Hm?” she asked me back. I swallowed a bit some before forcing myself to go on.

“Is there such thing as God?” I asked her. She smiled at me kindly.

“Do you want the truth or the sugarcoating?” my beloved asked me.

“The truth,” I replied. Elizabeth smiled at me kindly on that one.

“Alright then,” she replied. “No, there is no God.” I breathed a sigh of relief. All of this time I have living and in fear of a being that doesn’t exist? That is just so hard to believe even to this day. Our relationship fired up more from that night onwards. Even though the conditions changed for us, we still stayed together.

She proved this one night while we were in bed together after our usual lovemaking. Elizabeth turned to me with a little smile on her face.

“I’m getting married in three days,” she announced to me softly. “My finacee is a beautiful man. Smart and rich just like me.” I looked at her in silence.

“Do you love him?” I asked her. My love smiled and shrugged at me.

“Not as much as you,” she replied. “I will always love you no matter what, William!” I smiled at her fondly. I gently ran my fingers through her hair.

“I love you too,” I whispered to her. She smiled at me fondly. I just loved the way she looked when she was happy. And so it was from there. Elizabeth married Conrad Campbell in the summer. I didn’t go to the wedding. That would have been tacky of me given the circumstances that Elizabeth and shared. Our affair continued on even after the wedding. When the council got word of us being together, they didn’t approve of our relationship. They tried to separate us permanently. Those bastards couldn’t touch my beloved Elizabeth due to her power, so they went after me. I ended up banished from London to Scotland. That should have been the end of Elizabeth and I. But no, it didn’t turn out that way.

Elizabeth traveled all the way to Scotland to see me. By that time, she was pregnant with twins. Everyone knew that this wasn’t good with her condition. If she had the babies, she would bleed to death. They all suggested that she get an abortion to save her own life. But, Elizabeth didn’t care. She wanted to have her babies. If it cost her life, then so be it. So sick of people nagging her about keeping the babies, Elizabeth ran away from London to come and live with me in Edinburgh. Her husband and I supported her decision fully. But as the months wore on, I began to worry about my love as her health began to fail.

“Don’t worry about me William,” she told me repeatedly. “The babies and I will be fine.” I nodded at her smiling each time she said that. But yet, I didn’t believe her after watching her day after day. I wished that I could help her or end her misery. But, Elizabeth wouldn’t let me. She insisted that she would be fine. But her health said otherwise. So much so that she made me keep a promise to her when she died. I reluctantly agreed to do so. As a result, me love died five days the twins were born. I couldn’t really live with myself afterwards. All of my faith, hopes, and myself died along with my beloved angel Elizabeth.

*Today*

Looking back on my years with Elizabeth, I realized that I had to redeem myself through Cassie. I didn’t know how, but I just had to try. I just have to for Elizabeth and Cassie’s sake! I just have to!

 Chapter Two: Cassandra:

I followed both the girl and the boy halfway through the city. I made myself careful enough not to be seen so easily. I didn’t want to frighten them off. I didn’t want to lose Elizabeth again. I love her too much for that. I followed them all the way to their apartment. I went through the lobby, into the other elevator, and up to the third floor. (I just took a guess at what floor they lived on.) My guess paid off as it turned out. I saw the girl and the boy again walking down the hall. I followed behind them at a distance. They came to apartment 337. The boy pulled out a key and unlocked the door. He and the girl went inside and closed the door. I watched them ever so closely. I drew in a deep breath. Okay, here goes. I walked over to the door and knocked on it once. I waited for a few seconds.

“Coming!” I heard the girl say on the other side. My heart raced as I waited. The door opened up wide. There stood my young Elizabeth before me. Her hair had lightened up some from my memories of her. The eyes were still the same. This Elizabeth had a younger face and a smaller frame to her. I stared at her in wonder and awe. I wanted to run my fingers through her fine hair. I about did so, but I held myself back. All I could do was stare upon my young lover again. The girl on the other hand looked at me confused.

“Uh… hello?” she asked. “Can I help you?” My lips trembled at this girl.

“Elizabeth?” I let slip out of my mouth. The girl looked at me even more surprised.

“How do you know my mother?” she asked. That one took me for a surprise.

“Mother?” I asked her. “Elizabeth Campbell is your mother?”

“Yes,” the girl replied. “Why?” It took me a moment to process what was going on. Then, it all came back to me. Sixteen years ago, Elizabeth was pregnant with twins before she died. I was looking at one of those children. My heart with joy at this revelation.

“Oh my god!” I said aloud. “It’s you! I thought you and your brother were all the way in England.” The girl looked at me confused still.

“Uh… okay…” she said. “Who are you and can I help you?” I opened my mouth to speak again.

“Cassie, who’s at the door at this hour?” the boy asked us. Cassie and I looked up into the apartment. He came out to us with an apron around his neck and waist. He seemed to have been cooking something. The boy looked as us slightly confused.

“Cassie, who’s this?” he asked. She began to open her mouth to speak. I stepped forward smiling.

“Oh,” I said aloud. “I am an old friend of your mother’s!” Silence passed us by for a moment. I watched both of the twins silently. I hoped that they believed me. The boy stepped forward smiling at me.

“In that case, I welcome you!” he boomed to me. “Any friend of mom’s is a friend of ours!” I smiled at that one relived. Good, they do accept me after all. I bowed to him.

“I thank you for accepting me,” I replied.

“Hey you care to eat with us,” the boy spoke up again. “I just made dinner and I think I’ve made too much again. I just hate leaving leftovers.” I smiled at him kindly.

“Sure,” I replied. “I would love to.” By then, Cassie began to relax some at long last. I think she trusts me now. In a few minutes, the three of us sat at the kitchen table eating. Cassie’s brother served us the food and ate with us. Let me tell you, that was the first I had real English food in sixteen years! This young man could cook for sure! He looked at me smiling.

“So,” the young man said to me. “What do you think?” I smiled at him graciously.

“This is good!” I called out to him. The young man looked at me thrilled.

“Aw, I’m so glad you like it!!!” he called out. I nodded at him with grace.

“I’m Blake Campbell, by the way,” the young man introduced. “This is my younger twin sister, Cassie.” Cassie bowed her head gracefully.

“Nice to meet you,” she replied to me. I lowered my fork and spoon on my plate.

“My name is Doctor William Stonem,” I replied. “I used to be your mother’s doctor.” The twins looked at me in surprise.

“Really?” Cassie asked me. I nodded at her calmly.

“That’s right,” I replied. “Up until I moved to Scotland. May I ask you two something?”

“Yeah,” Blake replied.

“Sure,” Cassie answered.

“What are two sixteen-year-olds doing all the way out here in Japan all alone?” I asked bluntly. Suddenly, that sounded so much better in my head. “What are mean is, what brings you two here to Japan?” Blake smiled at me kindly.

“Oh,” he replied. “We came here looking for any connections with mom that were still alive. We heard that she had a mutual friend out here in Tokyo, Japan. So, Cassie and I picked up and hopped the next plane out to here. And now we’re glad that we found you.”

“I see,” I replied politely. “So what will you do now that you have found me?”

“We were hoping that you could tell us anything about mom,” Cassie answered with trembling pale lips. Something told me that this question would be coming. I know I will have to tell them the truth about everything. My affair with Elizabeth, the punishments that followed, and council. But not tonight. I just met them and I can’t chase away Cassie. I need her to help me find whatever it is I’m looking for now. But, I will tell them the whole truth one day. I promise.

“I can’t right now, it’s too late at night,” I reasoned. “I’ll tell you all about your mother piece by piece in the morning. Deal?”

“Deal!” the twins said together in unison.

“Would you like more tea, doctor?” Blake asked.

“Sure,” I replied. “And call me William.”

“Okay,” Blake said. Then he went over to the stove and made more tea. I looked deep into Cassie’s eyes. I felt like Elizabeth sat before me again. I just couldn’t lose her again this time. I wanted to tell Cassie that I loved her. But that would creep her out once more. I just met the girl after all. I wanted to reach out and lightly stroke her light blonde-red hair just like I did with her mother. I longed to kiss her on the lips and tell her that I loved her. I was tempted to tell her that I followed her here from the subway because she looked like Elizabeth. But it’s too late at night for that. I’ll tell her in the morning when we are alone. For now, I had my thoughts about Cassie and Elizabeth to keep me entertained.

“Here is your tea, Mr. William,” someone said to me on the outside. I looked up right away at that sentence. Blake stood next to me with the steaming cup in his hands. I looked him up and down for a long moment.

“Huh?” I asked him.

“You’re tea is ready,” Blake repeated. I stared on blankly for a moment longer. Then it all clicked inside of my head.

“Oh yeah!” I said aloud. “Thanks.” I took the cup and blew on the tea some to cool it down. Blake smiled at me kindly as I took a drink. The warm spices in the blend seemed to wake up every part of my soul. It seemed to bring back some sort of hope that I thought I had lost a long time ago. Maybe there are angels after all.

Chapter One: Ghost with a Lovely Face:

I don’t understand what it is while life today. Everyone is too wrapped up into themselves. They are all consumed with greed. It’s always about what can I get for myself? They live so foolishly until the very Day of Judgment. Then, they pray to their God to redeem them for their sins. There is no God. Humans just created him as a way to banish their own guilt. Where is God when the innocent ones are murdered for no reason or for a stupid reason? Where is God when awful things happen to good hard-working people? Nobody can answer that. I don’t understand my species anymore. I don’t even understand why I keep saving lives in my profession. They are just going to keep leading a path of destruction and die in the end. I just don’t understand it anymore. I used to. But now that I have become disillusioned with time, it all saddens me. Are we really doomed to live in this society of personal greed and self-obsession? It terrifies me to think about it. I try not to, but the truth stares me down right in the face. It disgusts me.

I don’t know. I used to believe in angels and God. I was a simple doctor in England. I took pride in my work. Let me tell you now, I was the best in the country. The council constantly smiled down upon me. I blindly followed every order that they gave me. Ha, the council! They are all a bunch of hypocrites! They pretend to care about their people in exchange for them to sell their souls to them. But in the end, the people are just little pawns to them to be used and thrown away. People are expendable to them. We couldn’t see it at all. Why? They manipulated us into believing everything was going to be okay. I would have happily given mine to them. I lived on contently in London playing by the rules. That’s until I met her…

Elizabeth Campbell. Such a beautiful woman. She was proof that angels do exist. Elizabeth had golden red hair like the sun. Soft brown eyes. Her laugh always brought a summer day. She had the heart of pure gold. We met on her first appointment with me. Elizabeth had always been a sickly woman. It was what you would call love at first sight for me. I chased her like a gentleman. Elizabeth resisted at first, but I won her over in the end. We became lovers and had an affair for many years. Even after she got married, Elizabeth and I still continued to see each other. We were that much in love. In our years together, she opened my eyes to the truth. She told me that there was no God and the council was just a group or powerful liars that used their people like animals to the slaughter. At first, I just went along with because I loved her. Over time, I saw the truth for myself. But, I kept my findings to myself. I still needed the money to survive and live.

The council disapproved of our relationship. They thought Elizabeth was a dangerous woman. They couldn’t touch her because of her rich background. Her family had so much power that they pulled the strings with the weak council. So they decided to take their wrath out on me. As a result, I ended up banished to Scotland. I was forbidden to ever practice medicine in London without consent of the council themselves. I could never talk or see my beloved ever again either. I expected that to be the end of her and me. But, Elizabeth still came to see me. I didn’t care what happened to me. With my darling by my side, I would be happy. We saw each other until her death sixteen years ago. With her died all of my hopes and beliefs in a better life. I just became a bitter and cynical man.

Sixteen years later, I now work as doctor in Tokyo. I work with children in fact. I don’t know why. I guess that’s all I know how to do. But what’s the point? Those poor souls are going to be corrupt and die one day anyway. I finished up with my last patient for the day. My night went on as it usually went. I left the hospital I work at after my shift ended, went out to pick up dinner, and headed home. As I took the subway home, something caught my eye. A boy and girl sat on the seat across from where I stood. My eyes focused closely on the girl. I thought I saw… Elizabeth sitting before me. It seemed that my darling Elizabeth had come back to life and came to Japan to find me once more. Only… she looked much younger. I squinted closely for another look. I realized this girl wasn’t Elizabeth at all. But who was she? I just had to find out. When the subway pulled to a stop, I followed both the boy and girl off at their stop. Here began my quest to regain Elizabeth and set her free once more.
