Chapter Six: Sweets are So Good:

School was just weird for the rest of the day. Everyone kept talking about the invasion. The kids kept asking the teachers about what was going on. They didn’t seem to know how to answer their questions. It didn’t bother me at all. Kat taught us better. Lyle and I didn’t know the facts yet, so we had nothing to say. However, all of the questions had me curious. When school left out, I looked around for my brother. I found him waiting near the gate as usual. He looked up as I walked over to him.

“Hey, Scout!” Lyle greeted me. “How was your day?” I stood almost under him. I looked up at him.

“Who invaded us?” I asked. He only shook his head at me.

“We don’t know that for sure.”

“But everyone keeps talking about it. So, it must be true.”

“Remember what Kat told us.” I sighed out loud.

“Not to make judgments until we have all of the facts.”

Chapter Five: Milo Cash:

I met an angel-faced boy today. His name was Milo Cash. I could never forget him if I tried. He was a tiny little thing. The best way to describe Milo was skinny and short. When I first saw him, I thought he was in kindergarten. We met on the playground. Everyone in my class was still talking about the invasion. They all wanted to know who this enemy was. Some of the kids were really scared. Others were angry. I personally didn’t care at the time. Kat taught Lyle and I not to form opinions until we had the facts. I didn’t know anything about the enemy just yet. So, I kept my mouth shut and went on with my little life.

My classmates asked me how I could be so calm at a time like this. I just shrugged at them.

“I don’t know,” I replied. “We don’t really know the details. So how can we be scared of what we don’t know?” They all looked at me like I had lost my little mind. Then, they all turned back to their worried conversation. I shook my head at them.

“Whatever,” I mumbled to no one in particular. I walked away to find my brother. That’s when I saw that young angel. He stood near the fence looking out at the street. I could only see his back. His hair was black and choppy. His clothes look so messy. I didn’t think I had even seen him here at school before. I blinked to see if I was seeing things. No, this kid was real. I couldn’t take my eyes off of him. How long had he been in this school? Who was he? Was he new? I decided to go and find out. I walked over to this kid staring at the road. I came up next to him.

“See anything interesting?” I asked.

“It’s always the same,” he said. “Day after day after day after day after day.” I found myself surprised by his accent.

Chapter Four: The Day the End Began:

I should have seen the end coming for a long time. I guess I was too young and naïve to grasp it then. I should have picked up on it on that day in class. The end of life as I knew came the morning that I asked Lyle about our enemy. My brother and I walked into the school like we normally did. Our classes are split into two sections. Lyle is on the second floor while I stay on the ground floor. That is where the kindergarten to second grades is. Third to fifth grades are on the second floor. My class is on the east side of the front part of the hall. Lyle and I walked into that hall on that unforgettable September morning. The morning started out normal enough. My brother let go of my hand. He looked at me with that smile like he normally did.

“Behave yourself, Claudia,” he said. “Try not to get into any fights today, okay?” I made a jokey-sour face at him.

“I won’t!” I protested. Lyle smirked at me.

“We’ll see,” he said. I frowned at him still. He never believes when I say that I won’t. (Usually, he is right about that, however. I am bit of a fighter. I always have been. So, it is easy to see why Lyle picks on me about it to this day. Don’t tell him I said that!) Lyle just laughed at me.

“Have a good day, you hear?” he said after that. I nodded at him.

“You too!” I said back. He waved me off before walking over to the elevator. I stayed where I was until my brother disappeared from view. Once he was gone, I looked over and my classroom and walked inside.

Chapter Three: The Way Life is:

I never understood our politics growing up. Everything just looked black and white to me. That’s how little kids my age see the world. However, it all started to change for me in the coming events. Lyle knew a little bit better than I ever did. I looked up to him because of it. One day while were walking to school on our first day, I said, “Lyle.” He turned to me after looking both ways before crossing the street to get to the “tunnel bus” as we called it.

“Yeah?” he asked. I shuffled my pink jellied foot a little bit.

“I heard we might have a war soon,” I spoke up. “Is that true?” Lyle’s face expression didn’t change.

“Claudia, they’ve been saying that for months!” he said bluntly. “Nothing has changed yet.” We crossed the street when the traffic was clear. I still wasn’t satisfied. Little kids like me could be curious to no end. That is one weakness of us. That was certainly my weakness.

“But they keep talking about it,” I said. “I’m scared that you might get shipped off to war.” Lyle snorted at me.

“I can’t go to war!” he protested. “I’m only a kid!”

“You’ll be thirteen soon,” I pointed out.

Chapter Two: Our House in Berlin:

*A little story written by Claudia Gains at age seven in her first grade class assignment*

My House

There was once a girl who lived in a house with her mommy and big brother. The house was pretty and old. The biggest one on the block! It’s like ten feet high! The roof hides the sun from the girl and her family. They called it the Lavender house because it was pretty and purple in the summer. Plus, vines grew all over it. Mommy said they were protecting the house from evil demons. Brother thought they were ugly. The girl loved the vines though. They always formed many shapes during the summer. (They look very ugly and brown during the summer though.) The house sat in front of the school where the girl goes. Because of this, the bus doesn’t come into her neighborhood. So, the girl and her brother always have to work to school with her mommy in the morning. The kids always walk home in the afternoon though.

Chapter One: Kat Gains
My mother had it all. Grace, wisdom, charm, great support, resources, heart. She could be called the modern-day Atticus Finch from To Kill a Mockingbird. Kat knew how to make things work to her benefit. To this day, my older brother, Lyle, and I still try to figure her out.

One thing that puzzles us is the fact that Kat managed to keep it together all the way through the events that led up to the invasion of Berlin in 2071. Any normal person would have snapped and killed someone by the time we got out of there. But Kat managed to keep it all together. As a result, we all were able to escape from Berlin in the night without any harm. Life in the states was hard for Lyle and me, but Kat made it all work out for all of us. We’re still trying to figure out how.
